This page contains a list of movies which plots are directly related to deafness. Ordered by my preference if I’ve seen the movie. Otherwise there is no number in front of the title.

1. CODA

As a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) Ruby is the only hearing person in her deaf family. When the family’s fishing business is threatened, Ruby finds herself torn between pursuing her passion at Berklee College of Music and her fear of abandoning her parents.

2. Children of a Lesser God

A new speech teacher at a school for the deaf falls in love with the janitor, a deaf woman speechless by choice.

3. Love is never silent

Margaret Ryder has always looked after her deaf parents, Janice and Abel. Long the only contact her folks have had with the speaking world, Margaret struggles with whether she should strike out on her own or not. When Margaret decides to make a change and ends up getting married, her parents interpret the move as a betrayal — and Margaret is forced to figure out a way to bridge her old life with her new one.

4. The Miracle Worker

The story of Anne Sullivan’s struggle to teach the blind and deaf Helen Keller how to communicate.

Silenced

Based on real events, this film depicts the story of a school for the hearing-impaired where young deaf students were sexually assaulted by the faculty members over a long period of time.

Beyond Silence (Jenseits der Stille)

Since the earliest days in her childhood Lara has had a difficult but important task. Both her parents are deaf-mute and Lara has to translate from sign-language to the spoken word and vice versa when her parents want to communicate with other people. Getting older and more mature she becomes interested in music and starts to play clarinet very successfully. However her parents are deaf, they cannot share Lara’s musical career. The day comes when Lara has to decide between her parents and her own ambitions.
