This is a distributed social media platform. Lot’s of people or organisations have setup their own Mastodon server. Most of them have their own topic or are region based. People can join any Mastodon server, but mostly this is influenced by the topic or region the server advertises with. Each server has it’s own rules you have to abide by. If you are not happy on one server you can just migrate to another server. You can follow other users on other servers, so your perview is not limited to that one server.
